You have already done the Mara. Maybe twice. You know what a leopard in a sausage tree looks like at golden hour. You are ready for something bigger than one more game drive loop. A Kenya safari victoria falls combo is the trip a lot of our repeat guests ask for next. It works better than people expect, as long as you plan the joins carefully.

This is not a rushed add-on. Kenya and Zimbabwe (or Zambia) sit on opposite sides of the continent, so the trip needs a real travel day in the middle. Done right, over 10 to 12 days, it gives you dry bush plains and elephant herds in Samburu. Then it gives you the roar of the Zambezi dropping 108 meters into the gorge below Victoria Falls. Done in a rushed 8 days, you will spend more time in transit than you will want to admit.

Why the Kenya Safari Victoria Falls Combo Makes Sense for Repeat Visitors

If you have already covered the Masai Mara National Reserve, the next move for a lot of our clients is Samburu National Reserve and the private conservancies of Laikipia. Samburu has species you will not see farther south: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, the long-necked gerenuk standing on its hind legs to browse. Laikipia adds horseback and walking safaris, plus real conservation stories around black rhino recovery at places like Ol Pejeta.

Victoria Falls, straddling the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, is a completely different register of travel. It is a town built around one enormous natural feature. Expect adrenaline activities, sundowner cruises on the Zambezi, and a slower, riverside pace after a busy safari circuit. Pairing the two means you get bush and water, wildlife and adrenaline, in one trip instead of two separate flights to Africa.

A 10-Day Sample Itinerary

Here is a route we build often, adjusted for guests who want Samburu instead of a second round in the Mara.

  • Day 1-2: Arrive Nairobi, transfer to Ol Pejeta Conservancy or straight to Samburu by light aircraft (about 1 hour from Wilson Airport).
  • Day 3-4: Samburu National Reserve, game drives along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
  • Day 5-6: Laikipia Plateau, walking and horseback safari, visit to a community conservancy.
  • Day 7: Fly back to Nairobi, connect toward Johannesburg.
  • Day 8: Arrive Livingstone (Zambia) or Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) via Johannesburg, settle in, sunset cruise on the Zambezi.
  • Day 9: Falls activities: white water rafting, the Big Five viewpoints, or a helicopter flight over the gorge.
  • Day 10: Final falls viewing, departure.

If you want to keep some Mara time too, check our travel distances and flight times between Kenya’s parks breakdown. It shows what fits into 12 days versus what forces a rushed cut.

Getting From Kenya to Victoria Falls: Flights, Time, and Cost

This is the leg every tour operator page glosses over, so here are the real numbers. There is no direct flight from Nairobi to Livingstone or Victoria Falls. You connect through Johannesburg.

  • Nairobi (NBO) to Johannesburg (JNB): roughly 4 hours 15 minutes, flown by Kenya Airways and South African Airways.
  • Johannesburg (JNB) to Livingstone (LVI) or Victoria Falls (VFA): roughly 1 hour 40 minutes, flown by Airlink and South African Airways.
  • Total travel time including a typical 2 to 3 hour layover: 8 to 9 hours, door to door.
  • Indicative round-trip economy fare: USD 550 to 850 per person, depending on season and how far ahead you book.

Book this leg early. Seats on the Johannesburg to Livingstone hop are limited. Prices climb fast inside 6 weeks of travel, especially around the July to October migration season, when both Kenya and Zambia-Zimbabwe routes get busy at once.

What’s Included, What’s Not, and Real Pricing

Most operator pages say “starting at” and stop there. Here is a banded, honest range for a 10-day trip covering both legs, per person sharing, based on mid-tier lodges.

Trip StylePer Person (10 days)What’s Typically IncludedWhat’s Usually Extra
Budget/mid-rangeUSD 3,800 – 4,800Lodges, park fees, road transfers, most meals, local guideInternational flights to Africa, Nairobi-Livingstone leg, some activity add-ons
PremiumUSD 5,200 – 7,500Above, plus light aircraft transfers, premium camps, some falls activitiesInternational flights, alcohol, rafting/bungee, tips
LuxuryUSD 8,000 – 12,000+Above, plus top-tier lodges, private guiding, most falls activities includedInternational flights, high-end shopping, spa treatments

Two costs almost never show up on operator quote pages: the internal Nairobi-Livingstone flight (USD 550-850, noted above) and park entry fees, which stack up fast on a multi-park route. Want the fuller list? See our page on hidden costs that safari packages often leave out.

Park and Reserve Fees (Kenya Side)

Where to Stay: Lodges for Each Leg

For Samburu, we like Elephant Bedroom Camp, right on the Ewaso Nyiro riverbank where elephants wander through camp most afternoons. In Laikipia, Sosian and Ol Malo both offer horseback riding alongside standard game drives. If your route still includes the Mara, a conservancy camp like Kicheche Bush Camp keeps you out of the main reserve’s vehicle crowds.

At Victoria Falls, the choice of side matters more than most guests expect.

FactorZimbabwe Side (Victoria Falls town)Zambia Side (Livingstone)
Falls viewpoint qualityWider, more dramatic full-face viewCloser to the main falls, more mist and spray
Standout lodgesVictoria Falls Hotel, Ilala LodgeRoyal Livingstone, Tongabezi
Visa cost (single entry)USD 30-45USD 50
Activities hubBungee off Victoria Falls Bridge, Devil’s Pool access (dry season)White water rafting put-in, Livingstone Island
Town atmosphereMore developed, walkable centerQuieter, spread along the river

Neither side is objectively better. We generally point repeat visitors toward Zambia if they want the rafting and Devil’s Pool experience. We point them toward Zimbabwe if the classic hotel-veranda view of the falls matters more.

Victoria Falls Activities Beyond the View

The falls themselves take an hour or two to walk. What fills the rest of your stay:

  • White water rafting on the Zambezi, grade 4 and 5 rapids, best from August through December when water levels drop.
  • Bungee jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge, 111 meters above the gorge.
  • Helicopter flights, the “Flight of Angels,” roughly 12-25 minutes over the falls and gorge, from about USD 150-220 per person.
  • Sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi, usually 2 hours, drinks and snacks included, from about USD 60-80 per person.
  • Devil’s Pool, swimming at the very edge of the falls, only accessible in low water season, roughly August to January.

Best Time of Year: Migration Timing vs Falls Water Levels

This is where the combo gets genuinely clever, not just convenient. The Great Migration crosses into the Masai Mara roughly July through October. Victoria Falls water levels peak around March to May, when the spray can hide the view. Levels drop through the year to their lowest around October to December, which is when rafting and Devil’s Pool open up.

That means a July to October Kenya safari, paired with the falls, lands you in strong migration viewing. You also get a falls visit with manageable spray and open activities. It is close to the ideal overlap. That is one more reason we do not recommend squeezing this trip into a random shoulder-season week just to save on flights.

Visas, Currency, and Border Logistics

Kenya requires an electronic travel authorization for most nationalities, applied for online before arrival, with a processing fee of about USD 34. For the falls side, Zimbabwe and Zambia both issue visas on arrival for most nationalities. Or you can apply for the KAZA UniVisa at about USD 50, which covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia entry plus a day trip into Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

Currency-wise, carry US dollars in small bills for both the Kenya and Victoria Falls legs. Kenya uses the Kenyan shilling day to day, but tourism pricing runs in USD. Zimbabwe operates largely on USD cash for tourism, while Zambia uses the kwacha alongside widely accepted USD. Card payments work at most lodges but not always at border posts or smaller vendors.

How Many Days Do You Actually Need

Nine days is possible on paper, and several operator packages sell it that way. In practice, a 9-day trip gives you roughly 3 full days of Kenya game drives after travel days are subtracted. That is thin for a repeat visitor chasing Samburu and Laikipia both.

We recommend 10 to 12 days minimum. That gives you 5 to 6 solid safari days across two Kenya locations, plus 2 to 3 unhurried days at the falls. You will not feel like you are sprinting through either half. If you have more time, adding a coastal stop is worth considering too. Our notes on how a beach extension add-on works after your Kenya safari cover that option in detail.

The Valley Safaris Difference

We plan this specific combo often enough to know where it usually goes wrong: the Nairobi-Livingstone connection gets booked too late, park fees get left off the first quote, and 9-day itineraries get sold as full trips when they are really compressed ones.

We quote the internal flight leg upfront, not as a surprise add-on later. We tell you honestly if 9 days will not do Samburu and the falls justice, even when a shorter trip would be an easier sell. Our guides know the Laikipia conservancies personally. We can place you with camps that fit how you actually like to travel, whether that is horseback safaris, quiet walking trails, or a private sundowner picnic overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro.
